Exhibition of Lacquer Ware (Urushi) May 13 thru May 29, 2004 Lacquer Boxes by Hakose Junichi
This exhibition features the works of celebrated lacquer (urushi) artist Hakose Junichi. Hakose was born in 1955 in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, a locale known as a prominent center of lacquer ware and other traditional craft arts in Japan. While employing traditional "Wajima-nuri" lacquer techniques, the artist has created an original style of lacquer ware with a strong contemporary feel. The theme for this Shin Exhibition is a unique focus on "the stacked." Hakose has made various forms of layered or stacked boxes, including ireko (nested boxes), jubako (tiered boxes), takarabako (jewelry boxes), along with several other creative forms.
