Visit the Yufuku Gallery for many more archived exhibits Tangan Exhibition Antique Indonesian Baskets & Textiles Early and Mid 20th Century April 2 to 16, 2004 We are delighted to present the "The Tangan Exhibition," focusing on the wonderful world of Indonesian craft art. Tangan in Indonesian means "hand" or "power" - and the many textiles and baskets in the Tangan Exhibition are all handmade with outstanding craftsmanship. Indonesia has a rich tradition in textiles and crafts. It is believed that Indonesian textiles were the inspiration for Japanese textiles, such as sarasa (printed textiles), kasuri (Japanese ikat) and shibori (embellished textiles), among others. Along with textiles, Indonesian baskets are a fine craft art, and this old tradition has been passed down and persevered to the present day. Shown on our invitation card are Palembang gold sarasa (cotton printed with gold as a formal dhoti), a Palembang fruit basket, a Sumatra flower basket, and a Sumatra basket with handle. All works in the Tangan Exhibition were made by fine craftsmen in the beginning or middle of the 20th century.
