Kurumaki Studio Collection

Kurumaki Studio Collection
April 19th thru April 24th, 2004

Lithographs and Etchings by
Nakagawa Kazumasa, Kato Touichi, Yanagihara Yoshitatsu
Migishi Setsuko, Koizumi Junsaku, and Senjyu Hiroshi

Kurumaki Kobo Collection

This exhibition features lithographs and etchings by various renowned artists. Kurumaki Studio was established over 30 years ago in Japan's Nara Prefecture. It maintains three studios for different styles of art: lithographs, etchings, and ceramics.

At this Shin Gallery exhibit, we'll show the work of six artists who are widely considered to be the most important amongst the many trained at Kurumaki Studio. These six are:

  1. NAKAGAWA Kazumasa
  2. KOIZUMI Junsaku
  3. YANAGIHARA Yoshitatsu
  4. SENJU Hiroshi
  5. MIGISHI Setsuko
  6. KATO Toichi

Unlike regular lithographs, in which an original painting is printed by a machine on lithograph stones, artists from Kurumaki Studio handprint their paintings onto lithograph stones. Approximately twenty-six works will be on display at the gallery, including "Rose C" (lithograph) by Nakagawa, "Waterfall #13" (etching) by Senju, and "Flower" (lithograph) by Migishi, which the artist composed upon her deathbed.
