Ono Hakuko Exhibition, 2003

September 16 to 27, 2003

Ono Hakuko Exhibition, SHIN GALLERY (Tokyo)

Artist Ono Hakuko
Ono Hakuko
 Born 1915 in Aichi Prefecture

Ono modified and perfected a technique involving cut gold-foil pieces to create underglaze designs. She passed away in 1996, regretfully; however we believe her work is appropriate to cerebrate the inaugural exhibition at Shin Gallery.

Features of Her Work. The use of the gold enamel technique (kinrande) is a noted feature of the work done by the late master potter Ono Hakuko. Gold has to be fired onto ceramics at lower enamel ware temperatures. This style of decoration can be seen on Imari, Arita, Nabeshima, and Kutani wares. The golden age of these delicately decorated porcelain wares was in the Genroku period, or the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Merchants, feudal lords, as well as the Imperial family used to collect and trade these wares. Ono's son,
Ono Jiro, is one of only a handful of contemporary ceramists to master the kinrande style.
