Exhibition of Suzuki Mutsumi's URUSHI Work
Suzuki Mutsumi Born 1942 in Kyoto
Suzuki Mutsumi is a renowned lacquer artist. He was born in Kyoto to a family that has for six generations passed down the tradition of making lacquer works. He has moved himself to create innovative forms while using the traditional material of lacquer. He once said that the beauty of a Ding-ware bowl made in the Northern Song Dynasty impressed upon him greatly, and inspired him to frequent the National Palace Museum in Taiwan. He was permitted to hold the bowl in his hands by a curator of the museum after many enthusiastic visits. Mr. Suzuki marveled at the lightness of the bowl. He promised himself that he would one day create light lacquer ware like the Ding Ware bowl. It is no exaggeration to say that since that day he has been creating lacquer ware that could even be presentable to the Northern Song Dynasty's emperor, Song HuiZong. As you all might be aware, today his work is appreciated in all corners of the globe, and has been collected by such major museums as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
