Ceramic Collection of Tachihara Masaaki February 25 to March 15, 2004
The TACHIHARA MASAAKI Collection Tachihara Masaaki (1926-1980) was a renowned novelist. One of his books, "Wind and Stone," was translated into English by Stephen W. Kohn and is highly appreciated in the West. Tachihara was born in Korea and was raised in Japan, yet was strongly attracted to medieval Japanese culture, particularly ceramic art, Noh theatre, and traditional gardens. His interests in Japanese culture led to his becoming a seasoned collector of ceramics.
The Tachihara Collection consists of many Korean Yi Dynasty ceramics, as well as a few Japanese and Chinese ceramics. One of the pieces to be exhibited, the "Yi Dynasty Large White Porcelain Tsubo Jar," is highly regarded by connoisseurs as a magnificent work of art. This Tsubo is known to have greatly inspired Tachihara during the writing of "Haru-no-Kane," or "The Spring Bell."
