We are pleased to present the "Mihara Ken Ceramic Exhibition -- Serenity." Yufuku Gallery has held several exhibitions of Mihara's ceramics in the past. This exhibit will be our 6th Mihara show since 1997. Approximately 30 of the artist's latest works will be exhibited.
One of Japan's most creative contemporary ceramic artists, Mihara Ken (1958- ) continues to enjoy rising respect from critics and fans alike. His works have a primordial energy, both subtle and sublime, that are rich in Japanese spirituality -- such are his sleek, sculptural forms and color schemes of grayish purples and blues, which are also an ode to his home in Izumo. Izumo is the ancient name of present-day Shimane Prefecture, an area steeped in ancient Japanese legends. Mihara captures the mythical mysticism of his home in his work. In his book Ceramic Art of Mihara Ken in the Four Seasons of Izumo, Mihara says that:
"Izumo is a place where the Shinto gods, during the month of October, congregated from all parts of Japan. I believe traces of such a past still remain in Izumo. I find it inevitable that the meaning of my existence, based on my upbringing in Izumo, is intertwined with the way I make ceramics."
For his current exhibition, the artist has created new sculpturally dynamic forms, all made with the clay of Izumo, that fully express both the uniqueness and the beauty of his world.
